Hey,
I recently downloaded CS:S off Steam and I am new to PC FPS's and such so please bear with me.
I keep getting lag problems in open areas and it's really, really peeing me off.. Completely putting me off PC FPS's altogether..
Basically, when I join a game if it's one with a big open area with lots of models and such I lag terribly, but then I can go into a smaller room on the same map and it'll be absolutely fine. By lag I mean REALLY low framerate, like 4FPS. I can literally walk through a door into an open area and it'll turn from perfect to lag hell.
My computer specs are as follows:
Intel Dual Core processor 1,83ghz
2038MB Ram
244mb Graphics Card
2,2mb internet connection
100gb HDD
(It's a laptop, if that helps)
I have done everything that every site has said.. Downloaded the latest drivers, put the resolution on as low as something like 640x400, put all the detail levels on minimum, run thorough virus scans, run Ccleaner, made sure my version of CS:S isn't corrupt, closed pretty much all other processes but CS:S and nothing has helped..
I can play games such as Age of Empires 3 online and Rise of Nations online with medium graphic levels with great ease, no lag, etc.. I just don't understand..
If someone would help me I would be so greatful,
Thanks.

Lag in large open areas with many textures that run together is typical of "lame hardware" please dont take offense to the term. Its used to identify hardware that just isnt up to standards for the game. I'm banking that if you had a better graphics card this would not be an issue. You'll be fine in small maps like iceworld and gungame maps. If you still wish to play large open maps the only thing I can suggest since all of your hardware is proprietary try this: http://www.invision-gaming.co.uk/Counter-Strike-Source/Caseys-Config-38.html its called casey's config it lowers all the unnecessary eye candy and what not in the game ensuring high fps.
