hi im new to Counterstrike source, i bought it only a couple of days ago
i have installed the game but when i try and join a server a message comes up saying 'server is not responding'
it then tries to enter the game and says 'connecting to server' and then after 30 seconds or so, comes up with 'connection failed after 4 retries'.
i then go on 'find server' and on the screen where the servers come up comes 'could not contact master game server to retrieve server list'...
my friend who also plays told me to reinstall it, so i have done that once already but there is no change.
any help or advice that anyone could give me?
cheers

Check the location of the server. I have personally not experienced this error myself, yet it sounds like your connection to the server's location is faulty.

Now my guess from what you've said is that you have a slow connection.
When you click on the view servers list, does it show any or is it just blank?

i have quite a quick connection speed and all the servers on the server list show up before i try to join a game
the problem is when i try to join any server
once i have tried to join a server and failed i then press find servers 'in game' and the message 'could not contact master game server to retrieve server list'... comes up and no servers show

Must be a firewall, or something else blocking your connection...if your internet is fast and connection is good there should be no problem, but when no servers show up it just sounds like a connection problem...

Does this happen with all servers, or just some specific ones?

aha!! i had a problem with me on tf2 liek this, its ur firewall.
Perhaps when u first started the game and steam tried to connect wiht the network u pressed declined? u should allow it for cs:s to find any servers.

Please make sure you have forwarded all ports on your router. You can see the server list of servers but you can not see any servers from inside the game which means your css ports have not been all opened. The required steam ports are:
UDP 27000-27020
TCP 27020-27050
these are all inclusive meaning source port can be any --> destination port must be the ones i just listed.
for instructions on how to do this with your particular router go to portforward.com
